Choosing Godparents and an Ile

Choosing Godparents and an Ile

This has to be one of the most important decisions one has to make when entering the religion, Santeria, or as many refer to it as, La Regla de Osha. This is a very special relationship between godchild and godparent. A relationship that closely relates to parent/child, brother/sister, and most important friends. This relationship that will be tested.  It is a relationship that must exist in the good as well as the bad. This relationship will require open communication and understanding from each party.

Ones godparents are the most important people outside of your natural parents. The godparents should treat you as one of their own children. The responsibility of the godparents differ from that of a parent, keeping in mind that under normal circumstances your birth parents can not and should not ever be replaced. The role of a godparent is to provider spiritual guidance and assistance to their godchildren.

Some of us have godparents who are family members or close acquaintances. Yet others have had to search for their godparents either by assistance from friends or by luck. However you will find you’re new home (Ile, santeria – Munanso, Palo) and family, it is only a choice that can be made by you alone.

The following should be taken into consideration when choosing an Ile:

  • First Impressions are a lasting impression
  • Ask questions about them and their religious family
  • Observe the family and their interaction with one another
  • Ask yourself if these were the types of people you would feel most comfortable

You need to understand that people are human first of all, no one is infallible. Therefore be cautious when making judgments about a person or their family.

The respect of an ile

·       Your potential godparents and family should demonstrate respect for other people, other houses, and other religions regardless of origin

  • Don’t expect quick fixes or quick solutions for your personal and spiritual problems

  • There should never be any exchange of work or assistance for sexual favors. As stated above, this relationship is like parent/child, brother/sister, friend, therefore any sexual act should never take place.

  • Drugs/Prostitution are not allowed

  • Gossip about family, friends and strangers should not be permitted

  • When rompimientos, spiritual bath, and other rituals take place, it should be performed with those of the same sex, male to male, female to female

The above are some guidelines that should take place in a godparent’s house. When you have chosen a godparent, it is a good idea for both the godparent and godchild to discuss what is expected:

  • The rules of house (ile)
  • What the godparent expects, and
  • What the godchild expects

It was stated, that this is a relationship that would be tested. Others will test it in the community, other priest/tess attempting to steal you away from the house you picked, and lack of trust. Once you have decided on your house (ILE), defend it; defend your new family, and your new godparents. Furthermore, you should expect the same from your new family.
